Cue Julie Andrews
Every January (read: this was my 3rd year) I host a Favorite Things Party. I actually have descriptions of everything people have brought here on my links page, shameless plug that isn’t that shameless because I didn’t link any of the products because I’m not making money on them either way. I love hosting this party because A) I invite people from all over my sphere in town and B) we all leave the night with new information about each other and about new things to try.
Here’s the structure: everyone brings 3 of the same item, $10 each. We have 3 rounds where guests each picks 1 item. All in all, you bring 3 and go home with 3 different items. We spin a wheel online to decide the order of the picks each round to keep everyone on their toes. The best bit is that before we pick, everyone goes around the room and talks about their item and why it’s their favorite thing.
On its head it sounds consumerist, but it really isn’t. It’s a great opportunity for someone to say, “I’ve tried them all, here is the best” and do the research for us. My surgeon friend says these are the best pens and highlighters? I trust her. My friend who is a weapon in the kitchen say these are her favorite spices? I’m all in. I want to lean on my friends as resources and as community to spread some good news and good vibes. We all need more of both!
