La Cave Holiday Dinner

Earlier this month we tried out La Cave which is connected to the restaurant Felix downtown in Charleston. I’ve been to Felix a few times - I rave about their Mac n Cheese all the time - but hadn’t been to La Cave so this felt like the perfect moment: a holiday tasting menu!

The event was advertised as $66/person for a Charles Dickinson-inspired dinner as follows: Join us for an immersive, Charles Dickens-inspired tasting dinner that brings A Christmas Carol to life through storytelling and cuisine. This five-course experience reimagines the dishes woven into the novel, each paired with a thoughtfully curated selection of wines. Guests can expect an evening of festive storytelling, creative interpretations of Dickens dining, and surprise gifts along the way.

Here’s the tasting menu - first is the beverage, second is the food pairing. We also got a apple gin martini as our welcome drink.

  • Bochet-Lemoine, Champagne Brut '18 // Oyster Rockefeller

  • Domaine De La Mandeliere, Chablis 1er Cru '22 // Radicchio Salade with orange, pecans, and goat cheese

  • Bernard Fleuriet et Fils, Sancerre Rouge '23 // Sausage & Apple Gratin with chestnuts, cabbage, and camembert

  • Domaine Raspail-Ay, Gigondas '21 // Prime Rib, roasted leek, sweet potato puree

  • Blade & Bow Eggnog // Cranberry Clafoutis, eggnog crème anglaise

We really loved the food - especially the prime rib and potato combo. The drinks were great, too, and it really felt like great value for money. We sat at a large table with three other couples (each at a corner) under a beautiful chandelier. They brought out the meals and drinks in rounds, with the staff detailing each as we received.

The only thing we were a bit confused by, based on the advertising, was that we’d assumed there would be someone telling the story while we ate, which wasn’t the case.

Overall, especially for $66/person, we’d be first in line to come back (but this time we wouldn’t go around telling our friends that we were going to a reading of A Christmas Carol, lol).
